Here’s a short story:
Graciously biting into a large burger in a serene restaurant while I await my acquaintance. Suddenly, I heard a voice as loud as I could hear my name. The voice and its message “what if you fall here and die”. Turning to check on whose voice it was, I realized that it was a close call from the other realm. Not up to a minute after the voice, I started gasping for air and it felt like life was escaping my being. Having learned from a praying mother, I began to call on the name of the Lord with the little strength I could garner. And then I remembered his words in Psalm 91:16 “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation”. There! That was how Jesus saved me from that attack. I used to attend an orthodox bible believing church. But after this experience, I realized that I needed a firebrand praying church just as I need food to nourish my physical body.
How was I able to locate a praying church? As stated in Acts 4:23-35 these are what I looked out for while searching for a praying church.
This recognition is a result of the discerning ability of a praying church. In Acts 4:24, when the Christians heard the ordeal of their brethren, they immediately discerned that such a problem only prayer could solve. Just as with my case, this ability to discern prompted further the desire to pray and wait on the Lord. sadly, only a few have a desire for prayer or see the importance of prayer. When you are cast down, can the church you attend see the need to pray for and with you?
In this same verse 24, the praying church chose to seek the face of God. It takes a person with a discerning spirit to know what to do in the face of problems. 1 Chronicles 12:32 “from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do…”. Whenever we are faced with problems, it is God that matters, not the meetings, the preacher, man or money. The gaze of a praying church is always upon God who is, the sovereign God, self-revealing God, and then seeing God.
For a man to pray, it means he saw the need to pray. That is to say that, it takes a praying poeple to bear the burden of the Lord and see the need to evangelise to win more souls. From verses 24-30 the people saw the challenge as an opportunity to pray and spread the gospel of Christ further. In a praying church, this is the overwhelming desire of members. If this does not mark the characteristics of your church, then there is a need for you to contribute your quota in making your church a praying church.
The proof of effective prayer is the results James 5:16 “…the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” not only did these Christians pray for the boldness to speak God’s words, they prayed in verse 30 that God should stretch out his hand to heal and perform miracles. Because where prayer is exercised God breaks in with His supernatural acts of miracles, signs and wonders. Imagine if I had relented on hearing the voice. Unfortunately, most people today either do not believe in miracles or they think that the days of miracles are over. However, a praying church invokes the supernatural power of God to wrought miracles in the spirit realm that saves, heals and restores men.
No doubt prayer is the secret of all the manifestations of the Holy Spirit you see in a praying church. In verse 31 the Bible says “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of God with boldness.” You can pick out a praying church from the aura of the presence of God they exude in the way they speak.
Conviction and conversions follow the preaching that is backed by a praying people. Every physical manifestation of the power of God you see in a praying church was/is birthed on a solid foundation of prayer. See what happened in verses 31 and 33 respectively. In every case where great things have been accomplished through the preaching of the gospel, it has always been in the answer to the prayers of God’s people.
Hebrews 4:16 “let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” and in verse 33 of Acts 4 because they prayed ‘boldly’ “much grace was upon them all” and there was
The grace of unity (32)
The grace of renunciation (32)
The grace of fellowship and (32)
The grace of liberty (34-35)
