The quest to start a black church emanated during the period of the slave trade. In a quest to own an African American church, the former slaves joined the American missionaries from the First Baptist Church and the German Baptist Church. They later moved to Baptist Hill in Rusk and Bagby streets to hold their services. It was at this point in 1868 that they ordained their first full-time preacher Jack Yates who transitioned the church into a new edifice. Subsequently, a red brick church was designed by the African American Richard Allen. And ever since, the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church became the first place of worship owned by African Americans in Houston, TX.

About The First Black Church In Houston - Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is the first African American baptist church in Houston, Texas. Pioneered in January 1866 by the then former slaves, who after their emancipation, were able to hold services in the First Baptist Church and the German Baptist Church at the back pew. Subsequently, they later moved to Baptist Hill in Rusk and Bagby streets to hold their services. It was at this point in 1868 that they ordained their first full-time preacher Jack Yates who transitioned the church into a new edifice. Subsequently, a red brick church was designed by the African American Richard Allen. And ever since, the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church became the first place of worship owned by African Americans in Houston, TX.

This feat paved way for other black churches in the Houston area. And since then, the area has recorded a good number of black churches in Houston.
